Putin Finds a New Ally in Iran, a Fellow Outcast

President Vladimir Putin left Russia for a rare international trip Tuesday and received a handsome reward (만족스러운 보상을 받다): a meeting with a prominent world leader who voiced a full-throated endorsement for (전폭적으로 지지하다) Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Traveling to Iran, Putin worked to solidify an Iranian-Russian alliance that has been emerging / as a significant counterweight to (= opposition, resistance 견제, 대항, 대응 / 미국을 상대할 힘) U.S.-led efforts to contain Western adversaries (서양 적대국을 억제하다). He met with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, who issued a declaration of support for Putin’s war in Ukraine / of the kind that even other countries close to Russia have so far stopped short of making (러시아와 가까운 다른 나라들조차 하지 못했던).

Khamenei’s endorsement of the war went well beyond the much more cautious support / offered by another key Russian ally, China, embracing Putin’s claim that the West had left the Kremlin no choice but to act (행동을 취할 수 밖에 없는).

It was a signal to the world / that with Europe and the United States now hitting Russia with sanctions comparable to those / that have suffocated Iran’s economy (이란 경제를 옥죄다) for years, the long-fraught relationship (오랜 어려움이 있었던 관계) between Moscow and Tehran may be becoming a true partnership.

“Russia and Iran still don’t trust one another / but now need each other more than ever,” said Ali Vaez, Iran director for the International Crisis Group. “This is no longer a partnership of choice / but an alliance out of necessity (더 이상 선택적 파트너십이 아닌 필요에 의한 동맹).”

Netflix Says It Lost Nearly 1 Million (백만명) Subscribers and Breathes a Sigh of Relief

The streaming giant said in its earnings report Tuesday / that it lost nearly 1 million subscribers in the second quarter. That’s the largest subscriber defection (가장 큰 규모의 가입자 이탈) in company history, but far short of the 2 million it forecast / during its dismal first quarter report in April.

When Netflix announced that it lost 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter / and expected to lose many more in the second, it suggested to many in Hollywood and on Wall Street / that the halcyon days of endless growth (사업이 끝없이 성장하는 태평성대의 날들 [ˈhælsiən] ) in the streaming business had come to an end.

The company still had a rough three months, but its revenue did grow 9% to $7.9 billion, a number that would have been higher / had the value of the dollar not pushed down the value of currencies around the globe. Overall, Reed Hastings, a Netflix co-CEO, called it “less bad results.(생각보다 나쁘지 않은)”

Netflix, which now has about 220.7 million (2억 2천 7십만) subscribers worldwide, told investors that it could add back 1 million in the coming quarter. And Hastings is bullish on (에 대해 낙관적이다) the future of streaming. “It’s the end of linear TV (유선 TV) over the next five, 10 years,” he said during a taped earnings call after the close of trading Tuesday.

And Netflix said it would begin to crack down (단속하다) more forcefully on password sharing / in order to effectively monetize the 100 million users whom Netflix said used its service without paying for it.
