Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss Will Compete to Replace Boris Johnson

Britain’s Conservative lawmakers settled on their choices (그들의 선택을 결정하다) to succeed Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday, advancing two candidates who worked for Johnson / to replace a leader / whose scandal-scarred tenure ended (스캔들로 얼룩진(상처난) 채 임기가 끝난) with his government in disarray (혼란으로 가득한), at a time of deepening economic crisis.

Despite its continuity, the leadership contest has managed to capture the Conservative Party’s rich diversity and its raw divisions.

Truss, a 46-year-old who once worked for Shell and began her political life as a Liberal Democrat, voted to remain in the EU but has since became a fervent convert (열렬한 개종자) to Brexit.

These different Brexit pedigrees (족보, 내력) are likely to figure (중요하다, 중요하게 반영되다) in the campaign, given the lingering role (여전히 역할을 지속하고 있음을 고려하면) that the 2016 vote still plays in the Conservative Party. Twitter Worker Accused of Spying for Saudi Arabia Heads to Trial

 While working at Twitter from 2013 to 2015, Ahmad Abouammo was responsible for helping celebrities, journalists and other notable figures in the Middle East promote their Twitter accounts. He handled requests for Twitter’s coveted (사람들이 갈망하는, 탐내는) blue verification badges and arranged tours of the San Francisco headquarters.

But the Justice Department (미 법무부) says he misused his access to Twitter user data, gathering personal information of political dissidents (정치적 반체제인사) and passing it to Saudi Arabia in exchange for a luxury watch and hundreds of thousands of dollars (수십만 달러).

Abouammo, who is charged with acting as an agent of a foreign power inside the United States, committing wire fraud (인터넷뱅킹(텔레뱅킹)을 이용한 금융사기) and laundering money (자금 세탁), is set to stand trial (재판을 받을 예정) this week in federal court in San Francisco.

The case, which illustrates the Saudi government’s intensity in pursuing information about its critics, is unfolding (=is happening) at a delicate point (미묘한(민감한, 위태로운) 지점) in diplomacy between the United States and Saudi Arabia.
