Making a Camera That Works a Million Miles Away

Marcia J. Rieke, 70, is the research group leader for the near-infrared camera, or NIRCam, on the James Webb Space Telescope, a $10 billion effort to explore the far reaches of the universe.
Q: As principal investigator, you were responsible for designing and building the NIRCam, and now it’s your job to make sure it will work almost a million miles from Earth. How nerve-wracking is that (얼마나 긴장되는 일인가요?)
A: Being responsible for an instrument like NIRCam is like a repeated roller coaster ride. There’s the high point when you have the joy of seeing things work as you had hoped. There’s a low point, especially early on, when something breaks and the design needs to be modified. And then there’s waiting for the next ride, such as launch. Of course, the highest points will be when fantastic data are gathered, great papers are written about the discoveries and the younger people on the team get great jobs
Q: How did you feel when the satellite was safely launched? What was it like to learn that its mirrors, heat shields and other components unfolded and locked into place without a hitch (순탄하게, 거침없이)?
A: Watching a rocket launch on Christmas morning was quite a novel experience. Learning that the launch was perfect in terms of direction, velocity (속도) and fuel consumption was icing on the cake (금상첨화). However, having all the deployments (전개, 배치) go so smoothly after many doubted that this could be done justified my faith and trust in the fabulous Webb team.
Q: NIRCam has the potential to capture light emitted just after the Big Bang, nearly 14 billion years ago, that is only now reaching our galaxy. You have now seen some images. How did it feel?
A: We’ve gotten the first images, and we’re super happy. The entire Webb team is ecstatic (황홀해 하는) at how well the first steps of taking images and aligning the telescope are proceeding.
Q: How did you surmount (=overcome) the engineering and operational hurdles in designing and building the NIRCam?
A: I had a lot of help in sketching out the initial design that we turned in with our original proposal. And then the engineers at Lockheed were very good at coming up with (제시하다, 제안하다) a way to assemble NIRCam at room temperature but have it meet all of the demanding requirements when it’s cold.
Q: When did the astronomy bug bite you (당신이) 천문학의 매력에 빠지다?

A: Almost all Ph.D.-granting research institutions have programs to encourage women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math); if you’re nervous or hesitant, seek out places where you can get advice and support. I was a pretty independent character, but I know some people are not quite so confident in their abilities. If you’re not feeling confident, find women to talk to. That’ll make you feel better and keep you going (계속해 나가다).

Olympic Champion Mo Farah Says He Was Trafficked to U.K. as a Child

Mo Farah, the first British track and field athlete to win four Olympic gold medals, said in a stunning revelation for his country and sport that he had been trafficked (인신매매를 당하다) to the United Kingdom as a child under a false name.
“Most people know me as Mo Farah, but it’s not my name, or it’s not the reality,” he said in a BBC documentary scheduled to be released (공개되다) Wednesday.
“The real story is I was born in Somaliland, north of Somalia, as Hussein Abdi Kahin. Despite what I’ve said in the past, my parents never lived in the U.K.,” Farah said in clips of the documentary that were released Monday.
Farah, 39, previously said he arrived in Britain with his parents as a refugee.
He said he was putting his citizenship at risk (sth를 위험에 처하게 하다) by sharing his story and spoke to a lawyer in the film about what the disclosure could mean for his future.
The lawyer, Alan Briddock, said that Farah was not likely to lose his citizenship because he was trafficked as a child and shared his story with the relevant authorities.
In the documentary, Farah said he was separated from family after his father was killed during Somalia’s civil war. He was brought to Britain at 9 with a woman under the name of another child, Mohamed Farah. He thought he would be going to stay with relatives but was forced into domestic servitude (가사 노동).
“I had all the contact details for my relative, and once we got to her house, the lady took it off me, and right in front of me ripped them up (갈기갈기 찢다) and put it in the bin, and at that moment I knew I was in trouble,” he said.
Years later, when he was enrolled in school, Farah told his gym teacher, Alan Watkinson, about his real identity. He was placed in the care of a friend’s mother.
In July 2000, with the help of Watkinson, Farah was granted British citizenship under the name Mohamed Farah, according to the BBC. He would go on to (~으로 나아가다) become one of Britain’s greatest sports heroes.
Farah, a distance runner, won two gold medals at the 2012 London Olympics, in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races. He successfully repeated as champion in both races four years later at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, winning gold despite a dramatic fall halfway through the 10,000.
Farah was knighted (기사 작위를 수여받다) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2017.
