1. Bite the bullet
Meaning: To face a difficult or unpleasant situation with courage.
Example: She had to bite the bullet and tell her boss about the mistake.
직역하면 총알을 삼킨다는 말인데요, 생각만해도 힘든 일이나 참기 힘든, 불쾌한 상황을 꿋꿋이 참고 나아간다는 뜻입니다.
2. Bite off more than one can chew.
Meaning: To take on a task that is way too big or beyond one's capabilities.
Example: Trying to learn three languages at once, she may have bitten off more than she can chew.
내가 씹을 수 있는 것보다 더 많이 베어 물다라는 말이죠? 즉, 자기 능력 이상의 큰 일, 무리한 일을 벌인다는 뜻입니다.
3. Bite the hand that feeds you
Meaning: To harm or criticize someone who is helping or providing for you.
Example: Complaining about the free snacks at work is like biting the hand that feeds you.
너를 먹여주는 사람의 손을 물다라고 직역되는데요, 다시 말해서 도움을 주는 사람에게 해를 가하거나 비난한다는 뜻입니다. 우리말로 배은망덕하다, 은혜를 원수로 갚는다는 표현과 일맥상통합니다.
4. Bite your tongue
Meaning: To stop yourself from saying something that may be offensive or inappropriate.
Example: When her friend mentioned a bad haircut, she had to bite her tongue to avoid saying anything.
문자 그대로의 해석은 ' 혀를 물어라'인데, 의역하자면 무례하거나 부적절한 말을 하지 않기 위해서 혀를 무는 것입니다. 하고 싶은 말을 하지 않고 이를 악물고 참는 것이죠.
5. Bite me!
Meaning: An informal and slightly rude way of telling someone to go away or expressing frustration.
Example: When asked for the tenth time about her weekend plans, she finally snapped, "Oh, just bite me!"
상대방한테 좀 화가 나 있는 상태에서, "어쩌라고!" "짜증나게 하지 마" "꺼져"라는 느낌으로 말할 때 쓰는 표현입니다. 한국말에서도 '물고 늘어지다'라는 생각을 해보면, '물어라, 까불어봐라'라는 게 즉 꺼지라는 뜻이 되겠죠? 즉 무례한 표현이니까 사실상 쓸 일은 별로 없겠지만, 그래도 영화나 미드에서 보면 이해하시면 되겠습니다.
6. Bite the dust
Meaning: To fail or be defeated.
Example: The ambitious project unfortunately bit the dust due to lack of funding.
땅바닥에 내쳐져서 입에 먼지가 들어와 씹히는 장면 생각해보시겠어요? 실패하거나 패배한다는 뜻입니다.
7. Bite-sized
Meaning: Something small and easy to manage.
Example: The new employee was given a bite-sized project to start with.
'한 입 크기의'라는 뜻이죠. 요즘 한 입크기의 초코바가 나와서 먹기가 편한데, 그만큼 많이 먹게 돼서 싫기도 합니다. 근데 또 다른 의미로는 한 입 크기만큼의 관리하기 쉽고 딱 편한 사이즈라는 뜻도 있습니다.
표현 활용 대화
Emma: Did you hear? I'm taking on two extra projects at work.
James: Whoa, be careful not to bite off more than you can chew. That sounds intense.
Emma: I know, but I want to prove myself. Hope I don't end up biting the bullet on this.
