World May Be Heading Toward Recession, IMF Warns

The world could soon be on the brink of (~의 직전에) a global recession as the economies of the United States, China and Europe slow more sharply than anticipated amid (~ 가운데) a collision of crises, the International Monetary Fund warned Tuesday.
In an update of the World Economic Outlook, the IMF said economic prospects had darkened significantly in recent months as war in Ukraine, inflation and a resurgent pandemic inflicted pain (다시 기승을 부리는 팬데믹으로 인한 고통) on every continent. If the thicket of threats continues to intensify, the world economy faces one of its weakest years since 1970, a period of intense stagflation across the globe.

“The world may soon be teetering on the edge (위험에 닥치다) of a global recession, only two years after the last one,” Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, the IMF’s chief economist, wrote in a blog post accompanying the report. Put simply, the outlook for the global economy is “increasingly gloomy (점점 어두워지고 있는),” he wrote.
The IMF downgraded ((등급, 수준 등을) 격하시키다) its global growth forecasts from its April projections, predicting that output will fall to 3.2% in 2022, from 6.1% last year. Growth is expected to slow even further next year as central banks around the world raise interest rates in an effort to tame inflation (인플레이션을 진정시키다) by cooling their economies.
The international group also warned of another problem that could emerge as the Federal Reserve raises interest rates. Higher rates are expected to further strengthen the U.S. dollar as investors plow into Treasury bonds that offer lucrative returns. The IMF said inflation in emerging markets could be amplified as the appreciation of the dollar made the imports that they bought with their local currencies more expensive.

Aldrin’s Space Memorabilia Sells for More Than $8 Million

A white, Teflon-coated jacket worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin during the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969 sold for $2.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction Tuesday, fetching the highest price among dozens of pieces of rare memorabilia tracing his career in space exploration.

Aldrin, now 92, has a storied career as an astronaut, joining NASA in 1963 after flying for the Air Force. Then, on July 20, 1969, millions of people watched on television as he became the second man to walk on the moon, about 20 minutes after Neil Armstrong, who declared it “one giant leap for mankind.”
