Police officials in suburban Chicago said they had seized 16 knives(칼 종류 전반. 특히 한쪽에만 날이 있는 경우가 많음), a dagger(양날의 짧은 검) and a sword(긴 장검) in 2019 from a man who was charged Tuesday with seven counts of murder in connection with (~과 관련하여) the deaths of seven people at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois.

Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office / said officials had seized (압수하다) the weapons from the man, Robert E. Crimo III, after a family member told officers in April 2019 / that he had planned to “kill everyone.” He was not charged in connection with(~와 관련해서는 기소되지 않았다) that incident.

But on Tuesday evening, Eric Rinehart, the Lake County state’s attorney, said in a news conference that he had filed seven first-degree murder charges against Crimo, accusing him of the Fourth of July massacre that shook this lakefront suburb north of Chicago, and expected to file dozens more charges against him in the coming days.

Crimo faces life in prison if convicted, Rinehart said, describing the attack as “premeditated(사전에 계획된, 계획적인) and calculated.”

But the details of the 2019 weapons seizure(무기 압수 내역), as well as an incident earlier in 2019 in which someone reported to police that Crimo had attempted suicide, raised questions about how and why he was able to purchase several guns in the years since.

Those guns were bought legally by Crimo in Illinois, officials said, meaning he had obtained a firearm owners’ card from the state police. The agency issued a statement(성명을 발표하다) late Tuesday saying that Crimo’s father had sponsored his son’s application (아들의 (총기 구입 신청의) 보증인이 되었다) in late 2019, when Crimo was 19, after the reported incidents.

 The shooting at the Independence Day celebration came a week and a half after President Joe Biden signed the most significant gun measure to clear Congress(의회를 통과하다) in nearly three decades, but it was unclear whether any of the new regulations would have stopped the gunman. He carried out his attack in a state that already has some of the nation’s toughest gun laws, but is bordered by states where firearms are much easier to come by.

An Olympic-Like Honor for Younger Mathematicians

 The Fields Medals, first awarded in 1936, were conceived (탄생되었다)  by John Charles Fields, a Canadian mathematician. They and the Abacus Medal are unusual among top academic honors (학문적 영예)  in that they go to those (~한 사람들에게 수여된다는 점에서)  still early in their careers — younger than 40 on Jan. 1 (1월 1일을 기준으로 40세 미만) — and honor not just past achievements but also the promise of future breakthroughs (미래의 큰 성과로 이어질 장래성(가능성)).

Most top mathematicians discovered the subject when they were young, often excelling in (~에서 두각을 나타내다) international competitions.

By contrast, math was a weakness for Huh, who was born in California and grew up in South Korea. “I was pretty good at most subjects except math,” he said. “Math was notably mediocre (못마땅함- 보통 밖에 안 되는, 썩 좋지는 않은), on average, meaning on some tests I did reasonably OK. But other tests, I nearly failed.”

 As a teenager, Huh wanted to be a poet, and he spent a couple of years after high school chasing that creative pursuit ([pr·soot] 일, 활동, 취미 (원래는 ‘추구’, ‘추격’)). But none of his writings were ever published. When he entered Seoul National University, he studied physics and astronomy and considered a career as a science journalist.

It was only (~이 되어서야) in his last year of college, when he was 23, that he discovered math again. That year, Heisuke Hironaka, a Japanese mathematician who had won a Fields Medal in 1970, was a visiting professor (초빙 교수, 객원 교수) at Seoul National.

Hironaka was teaching a class about algebraic geometry, and Huh, long before receiving a doctorate, attended, thinking he could write an article about Hironaka. “He’s like a superstar in most of East Asia,” Huh said of Hironaka.

Huh graduated and started working on a master’s degree with Hironaka. In 2009, Huh applied to about a dozen graduate schools in the United States to pursue a doctoral degree.

“I was fairly confident that despite all my failed math courses in my undergrad transcript ((대학) 학부 시절 성적증명서), I had an enthusiastic letter from a Fields Medalist, so I would be accepted from many, many grad schools,” he said.

All but one rejected him: the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign put him on a waiting list before (그를 대기자 명단에 올린 후에 ~했다 ) finally accepting him.

“It was a very suspenseful few weeks,” Huh said.

At Illinois, he started the work that brought him to prominence (그에게 명성을 안겨주었다) in the field of combinatorics (조합론), an area of math that figures out the number of ways things can be shuffled. At first glance, it looks like playing with Tinkertoys.
